Alicante is a very busy and well-traveled city in Spain. It was once a primarily working industrial town, but like much of Spain in recent years, the city has become something of a tourist attraction, with visitors from all over Europe and the world visiting the area yearly. With the business of tourism comes a more tourist friendly feeling and tourist friendly resources to make the stays more comfortable, efficient, affordable and convenient. Alicante is in the southeaster corner of Spain between mountains and the Mediterranean Sea and is a busy port city with a large population.
Alicante’s El Altet International Airport makes it possible to get to the city from anywhere in the world. The airport is home to most major international airlines, as well as many independent, affordable, economy and private planes. There is an option for just about everyone who would like to fly by air to Alicante and the surrounding tourist areas, from the salt baths and Nature Park in Torrevieja to the four different theme parks in Benidorm. People flying from other regions in Spain like Ibiza, Madrid and Barcelona may also make use of the convenience of flying into Alicante at the Altet Airport.
It is also feasible to travel to Alicante from many areas in Northern European countries by bus and train. There is also always the car hire, or rental car option for intercity travel. The tram and trenet rails also pass through many of the smaller cities within the province of Alicante where the capital city of Alicante is located. Use this mode of transport to move between the more northern areas in Benidorm, Denia, or Altea. There are also bus services that run between the city of Alicante and the outlying towns and villages, beaches and mountain regions.
An interesting but rather unreliable mode of transport to Alicante is the ferry from Algeria. The Algerian government is in a varying state of turmoil at certain times and the rides are not always consistent, but if you find yourself in Algeria looking to get to Alicante, if you are lucky and the ferry is running, you will have a ride.
Most of the people in the more laid back outer areas of the city walk to and from place to place, but if that is not for you, there are taxis and buses available. The pedestrian atmosphere leads to a relaxed and easy going flavor to these areas.
Staying in Alicante is also easy to do. The city is loaded with accommodations for travelers to Spain. The downtown skyscraper hotels even offer views of the mountains and sea. Just outside the city you can stay on the beach, and still be very close to the heart of downtown.
