Ride Your Bike in Beautiful New York

Though New York City is one of the most famous cities in the world, it is no surprise that people come to NY without ever visiting the city. There is so much natural beauty that few states can compare. If you enjoy cycling, don’t miss the scenic joys of New York State.

If you are new to cycling, the Auburn Fleming Trail in Auburn, NY is a great place to start. This trail began its life at a railroad track. It is a short ride in biking terms (only 3 miles long), but there is tremendous scenery from start to finish. The only caution with this trail is that its inherent popularity makes it a bit crowded with other riders and pedestrians.

The well maintained gravel path of Mason Lake is also a great spot for beginners. Located in Speculator, this old logging road is 6 miles long and offers some terrific scenery. This particular spot is not well traveled, so it is a great place to bring the family as well.

The Erie Canal/Cayuga County Trail System near Weedsport, New York is a very unique trail. Much of it follows the Erie Canal towpath that extends from Buffalo to Albany. The most scenic section to ride is between Jordan and Port Byron. All in all, there’s about 15 miles of trail that is largely made up of rolling terrain, but the scenic section is mostly flat. There are numerous entrance and exit points along the way. You’ll definitely want to bring your camera along for this ride!

The Ninham Mountain trail is a 15-miles loop near Carmel, New York. There is something here for everyone, but since there are no maps of the area, it might be best to ride with someone who knows the trail. You absolutely must climb the old Ninham Mountain fire tower for incredible views of Catskills!

If you enjoy the well paved paths often provided by popular ski resorts, you will love the Dryer Road bike trails of Victor. There are so many options with these paths that you will not get bored. They often add new bike paths throughout the season, so this is a favorite among regulars. There is plenty to practice on with s-turns, descents and great cut backs.

Recommended for the experience biker is the Hither Woods Trails in Montauk. Montauk, nicknamed “the end” is located at the eastern most part of Long Island. With over 40 miles of awe-inspiring trails and thousands of acres of park land, it is recommended that you get a map and bring plenty of water. There are plenty of gorgeous and treacherous cliffs near the water in addition to narrow paths, so you must be careful. If you can work the landscape, you’ll see why the east end of Long Island is so popular with the affluent.

There are many other trails to choose from, but this list will keep you busy and satisfied. There is so much diversity among the biking trails, not unlike the city of the same name, that even the most discerning of riders is sure to find a great ride. Happy Biking!
