The power of the tides has made unique, energizing and wild rides. There are several degrees of excitement and the Bay of Fundy gives you a little of each.

Ride the Reversing Falls

For the advanced white water kayaker, the reversing falls at low tide present a fantastic challenge, making a fantastic ride.

For the less adventuresome, but equally daring, try walking through the falls in a unique “bubble” or partaking in a jet boat ride.

Surf the Tidal Bore & Mud Sliding

The earth at the top of the Bay opens up to waters that quickly flow in at high tide. A few local outfitters use this phenomena by organizing white water adventure tours. This is a wild experience that’s truly totally unique to the Bay of Fundy.

Once the Tidal Bore is emptied of the mighty waters of high tide, steep muddy banks are revealed. For the truly bold and a touch crazy only.

Sea Kayaking

The Bay of Fundy has superb chances for sea kayakers. The waters can be still on occasion as the Bay does offer shelter from the open ocean’s wake creating fantastic conditions to explore a principally natural coast. With 6 hours between low and high tides, the view of the tide worn shores is consistently changing.

Scuba Diving

For the ones that brave the cold waters of the Bay, Fundy offers spectacular underwater life and real challenge. Deer Island, among the Fundy Isles, is a local scuba diving hot spot.

Whale Watching

Home to at least eight different types of whales, whale watching is a favored activity on the Bay of Fundy. Tours range all the way from 2 to 6 hours and are offered from a variety of coastal locations along the southern parts of the Bay.

Hiking/Back packing

The Bay of Fundy has trails for all levels of hiking. Whether searching for a short path to an amazing view or a back country paradise, the beaches of the Bay have it all.

Rappelling/Rock Climbing

Cape Enrage is one of the Bay of Fundy’s most dramatic rock faces, creating a chance for the most impressive rappelling and rock climbing in the region. A perfect activity for the adrenaline junkies.

Caving

Many caves have been sliced out of the shores of the Bay by the power of the tides. Exploring these caves can be stimulating and dangerous. Cavers always need to be careful of the rising tide. Guided tours are available.

I’ve always very much wanted to visit Pulau Redang or Redang Island (as known to many others) after watching Summer Holiday during my teens. Few months ago, I’ve chanced upon this great deal from Redang Bay Resort, so I thought, why not?

Flying with Berjaya Air from Singapore

Redang bay resort is located on Redang Island, near the east coast of Terengganu (Peninsula Malaysia). It is pretty accessible if you are staying in Malaysia, Singapore or even Batam. For my buddies residing in Kuala Lumpur, A 6 hours drive is all it takes to get to the jetty at Merang or Kuala Terengganu.

70 minutes of flying from Singapore

My first time onboard Berjaya Air. Neat and comfy plane with little passengers. Taking a mere 70 mins by flight from Changi Budget Terminal, Singapore. I literally had my safety-belt on throughout the flight. I couldn’t recall when was the last time I had my seat-belt in place throughout a flight.

Landing in Redang

When I arrived in Redang, it was simply heaven. Crystal clear glowing waters, powder like sandy beach front, lovely coral reefs and a crew of the resort b me that there are more than 20 diving and snorkeling areas can be found around Redang Island.

45 seconds to the beach

The most amazing part of the resort of my choice, is that the beach is really a few strides away from the resort. I guess a mere 45 seconds stroll? I was tempted to try out some of the features the resort offer including canoeing trips, karaoke, card games, beach football (my favourite), kayak trips. But nothing beats hanging out at the beach with a Tiger Beer in one hand.

I looked at some of the packages the resort are offering which includes:

1. Trekking in the jungle

2. scuba diving and snorkeling

I went with the snorkeling trip!

Redang visit tips

Here are some tips if you plan to visit Redang anytime soon. :)

Price: RM 428 per person for twin room which includes boat transfer from Merang Jetty.

The special package;

3 Days 2 Nights could include the following: 8 meals (2 breakfast, 2 lunch, 2 dinner, 2 tea break) all meals are buffet style with BBQ on alternate nights (I really enjoyed that)

There are some packages that comes with 3 snorkeling trips and operating at: 9.30am & 2.30pm everyday. One snorkeling location at Marine Park inclusive. You have a choice to replace it with a jungle trekking trip if If you are not into sea sports.

Do take note, all packages excludes: marine park fee – RM 5 and life jacket rental – RM 15 and mask snorkel set rental – RM 15

Book a flight with Berjaya Air if you are from Singapore – it flies from Changi Budget Terminal to Redang Airport in a mere 70 minutes. Flight departing at 11.50am and reaches around 1pm Redang. Returning flight to Singapore is at 10am. This daily flight back to Singapore is a huge thumbs up for me!

I managed to book Berjaya Air at only SGD 150 for a return flight tickets, but with only 10kg baggage allowance limitation. Good enough for me anyway.

In conclusion, I had a great weekend at Pulau Redang.

Don’t wish for it to be over. Enjoy every minute.Even embrace the pain because it lets you know you are alive. And make sure to eat and drink regularly so you don’t bonk. ~ Susan Haywood, Professional Mountain Bike Racer for Team Trek/Volkswagen 2007 El Reto del Quetzal Participant, Guatemala 2006 24-Hour Women’s World MTB Champion

Susan Haywood loves the sport for the enormous sense of true accomplishment it gifts her, is a world pro mountain bike champ. “Appreciate each minute. You can even savor the pain because, after all, it is a sign of life!” “Whoa!” MTB racers are drawn season in and out, from these words of inspiration to continue riding their dreams. With world-class terrain, it is accessible thorough out the year, in MTB action circuit in Central America.

In this area, you will find three races of note. The world’s oldest and most challenging mountain bike race is La Ruta de Los Conquistadores in Costa Rica – a race that even Lance Armstrong declared that he would find difficult to do without training for it. It started 17 years ago. El Reto of Guatemala began in 2007 and next to follow was San Juan Howler of Nicaragua of year 2008.

Would you like to know more about biking through Central America?

Susan Haywood is universal professional champion. It was really cool to experience El Reto. It was the best way to see the sites in Guatemala. Apart from having lot of high angle climbs in mountains, there are wild dogs and chickens all around, too. Because I’ve heard that they changed the course to make it better I want to get back and race at El Reto.

El Gato Negro, located in San Juan del Sur is owned by Rob Thomas. A lush tropical jungle is the setting for Howler. Amazing outlooks of the shoreline with landscapes extended to Costa Rica deriving from the most elevated place of the race track! This race features varied terrain and soil conditions. Climbing some monster hills. Rocky riverbeds, mud holes, and a fast dirt road make for a tough and scary single-track downhill that most riders can’t make it down. This is an endurance race that requires a wide variety of biking skills because of the challenging conditions and terrain and the tremendous distance covered. Quick Fact: Expert riders will climb over 8 miles through the steep elevation changes.

Important point: San Juan Howler race is sponsored by El Gato Negro. Dishing up wholesome meals is being done at their caf and Nicaragua’s first English bookstore by Rob and his wife Kelly, since 2005. To harvest their organic coffee, they use human and horse labor until the final part that involves removing skin. This rich brew gets great reviews for this very reason. Nice and relaxing after an morning of mountain bike action around San Juan.
