Business Opportunities in the Surf Industry

In terms of public opinion, surfing is a sport that has established a unique niche for itself over the course of time-and not necessarily one defined by the quest for monetary success. Nonetheless, that may be somewhat of a skewed depiction as there are in fact some very promising business opportunities arising from the field of surfing, definitely more so than people realize.

That’s because surfing is a sport, an activity that captures the fascination of such a wide swath of the population, and which is incredibly popular with young, adult, and old people as well. And anything that stirs the emotions of so many people of such disparate descriptions has to present some viable business opportunities.

The main facet of surfing that furnishes the possibility for a little entrepreneurialism is the fact that it’s not exactly a sport for which you can just lug your gear around anywhere, anyhow. Surfboards are unwieldy, clunky things that present significant transportation problemsand any problem is an opportunity, as any good entrepreneur knows.

In this sense, setting up a surfboard rental business is a viable and legitimate business idea that has the possibility of becoming a very rewarding endeavor indeed. Needless to say, some basic conditions need to be satisfied for such rewards to really begin to flow in: you would need to be located near a recognized surf spot that presents optimal (or close) surf conditions. Without this, you’d really just be shooting in the dark.

Another consideration to keep in mind has to do with the condition of the surf equipment which you would be offering to rent out. Despite the fact that many surfers don’t have enough money to be picky with what they rent, it would be foolish to let this trend convince you to short-change your clients. Penniless though many surfers may be, the surfing community is remarkably interactive and shares such information with amazing speed and consistency at the regional and even the international level. Hence, if a couple of serious surfers have a negative experience with your business, you will be effectively guaranteeing yourself a bad reputation and thereby missing out on future customers.

A further opportunity to set up a business presented by the surf field essentially entails taking the previous idea and applying it in a broader sense: more than just offering rental equipment to hit the waves, also offering transportation means and possibly lodging as well, expanding to whatever additional services the traveling surfer may require. Clearly the focus here is on traveling surfers, which is an audience that is considerably larger than most people would imagine at the global level.

An advantage to this model is that the people at hand are more likely to have the money on them to afford your services, and make them profitable. The fundamental idea here is providing a comprehensive service to surfers traveling somewhere-in this case, traveling to your neck of the beach.

To launch such a business, the basic necessities are: having a fair amount of quality surf equipment; having sufficient time on your hands to satisfy the needs of eager visitors; and possessing the kind of flexibility and intuitiveness that make such an operation feasible. With these factors present, along with the support of a worldwide network of surfers and surf fans (mostly online), it is possible to develop a dream business that is centered exclusively on the sport (or the art) of surfing…and that is beyond words for many people.
